Researchers are studying moose on Isle Royale to learn the impact of predators on the island.
In February, researchers put GPS collars on more than a a dozen moose so they could track their movements.
Liz Valencia, a spokesperson for Isle Royale National Park, says the island moose haven't been studied in this way in over thirty years.
Valencia says the researchers are interested in how more wolves on the island may affect the behavior of the moose.
"It’s looking at the whole ecosystem and seeing how all the different influences affect it, Valencia says. "Adding predation now is the biggest change for Isle Royale."
The park recently got more than a dozen wolves from Minnesota and Canada. Before, the wolf popuation had dwindled to just two.
Valencia says the team also hopes to learn more about the health of the moose compared with the mainland population, and the effects they have on the island ecosystem. The study will be completed in 2022.
