How well do you know the US Constitution?
Folks in Bellaire gathered at the Bee Well Mead and Cider House last month to get to know it a little better by copying it — longhand.
People of all ages huddled around tables and wrestled with the words, what they meant, and how well we're following them.
"Oddball punctuation and capitalization gets just thrown in, but I know the portion I wrote was very powerful," said Tom Brown, who was copying the 25th Amendment.
Rowan, a 12-year-old from Traverse City, was up to her elbows in Section 3 of the 20th Amendment. When asked how well our government was doing at following the constitution, she said "there's things they are good at and there are things they could do better."
She was concerned about our diversity of opinions. "Opinions matter," she said. "And I don't think they put that into consideration."
Bartender Gabrielle Coppersmith was taping each page up on the wall.
"It brings about a great conversation," she said. "We're creating open and safe spaces for people to talk about these types of things."
For the remainder of the weekend, the hand written Constitution remained taped on the wall for all to see and discuss over a glass of mead.
