The Mancelona Chamber of Commerce tracked the deer coming in over the weekend. See the stats.

Hunters in bright orange headed out the door early on Saturday to mark the opening day of firearm season across northern Michigan.

The annual deer hunting opener is practically a Michigan holiday, full of traditions across the state, including the Mancelona Buck Pole — a place for hunters to display their take.

At exactly 7:47 a.m., Mancelona resident Brad Moore arrived at the buck pole with a 9-point buck. He was greeted by a small crowd.

"It was fast," Moore said. "He came out and had three other deer out there. He came out looking for does. That was about it. That was the end of him."

His deer was hoisted up the scaffolding at the corner of U.S. 131 and State Street in Mancelona, the first stop before it ends up on a plate in the Moore household.

"It’s gonna be delicious either way we do it," he said. "We usually make a lot of jerky, a lot of steaks, and backstraps are always the best part."
