Think DJing is just for twenty-somethings? Think again.

Blissfest, near Harbor Springs, is known for folk and roots music. But each year, DJs come up to Harbor Springs too, playing dance music for the crowd.

"I always really enjoyed the way that DJs could keep you on the floor through the music, even when you were thirsty, tired, had to go to the bathroom, hungry… I wanted to have an opportunity to create those moments for other people."

At a ‘silent disco’ event at night, festival goers dance to the beats through pairs of headphones they can set to one of the many DJs.

One of them is Deon Claiborne, known as DJ Auld (an Old English word for "old"). She took up DJing in her late fifties. Now 66, she spoke with IPR about what drew her to the turntables.

"I had been a club kid back in the late 70s, early 80s. And I love dancing, and I will go out dancing all the time," she said.

She'll perform Friday, July 11 at Blissfest Folk & Roots Music Festival.

Listen to Claiborne talk about how she took up DJing — and hear samples from two of her sets — in the audio player above.
