Line 5
Last week Izzy Ross reported that tribes pulled out of discussions with the Army Corps of Engineers about the permitting process for the proposed Line 5 tunnel beneath the Straits of Mackinac.
The breaking point that caused seven tribal nations to leave the conversation with the Army Corps was the idea that the process might get fast tracked.
In order for that to happen, the project would need to fit underneath an energy emergency declaration the White House has made. We’ll be looking to see this week if that comes true.
Line 5 owner Enbridge is a Canadian company, and this conversation exists amid growing tensions between the U.S. and Canada.
IPR's Izzy Ross and Juanpablo Ramirez-Franco at WBEZ did some reporting on the tensions for Grist. Hear them talk about it on Tuesday during Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
