As part of the Trump administration’s efforts to review and cut spending, the U.S. Department of Agriculture paused funding for the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes hundreds of millions of dollars for the Rural Energy for America Program, or REAP.
- REAP provides grants and loans to rural residents across the country.
- A quick tally shows $1.5 million of IRA funding has been set for REAP projects in northern Michigan, such as solar arrays.
- Some projects in the region have yet to receive money amid the federal pause.
Check out this map from Grist to see where money from the Inflation Reduction Act and bipartisan infrastructure law is slated to show up in northern Michigan.
Hotspots
A new study from the University of Houston could change the way we understand the Great Lakes.
- Hotspots existed under Pangea over 300 million years ago where the Great Lakes exist today.
- University researchers used seismic models to study the Great Lakes region.
Look for that in tomorrow's Maritime Time.
