This is a story about zombies, machine guns and nuns with lightsabers.
All of them are featured in the MASHUp Rock’N’Roll Theater’s presentation of "The Sound of mUZIc" this weekend in Traverse City. It's based on "The Sound of Music," but with a twist.
Lesley Tye is the show's director.
"We've placed it in a zombie apocalypse," Tye said. "We've sort of flipped things. So Maria is the top zombie killer, and she gets sent to the VonTrapped family to try and help them survive and figure out how to survive."
Tye's musical mixes serious topics with some levity.
"This is silly, it's fun, it's wacky, but there are real serious things," she said. "At the heart of it, we're telling stories about characters. We're dealing with the idea of empathy and understanding a character's point of view. We're remixing these things to try and sort of explore new perspectives. We need to focus on our similarities, on our humanity, and not about our differences."
