Traverse Area District Library is accepting entries from local musicians for a new music streaming service.

Josh Denby, with the library’s Sight & Sound Department, said the program will highlight the area’s talent and introduce people to new artists, which may even surprise those already familiar with the local music scene.

“People already know that Traverse City and this area are great for music,” Denby said. “I think that the eclectic styles of music that we have here in this city are going to surprise and delight our patrons … they might not realize how much deeper the local music scene goes.”

Denby said the library already carries a large collection of CDs from local artists, but that this program will align better with people’s listening habits and will put more money in the hands of the artists whose songs are chosen.

For the first round, 20 selected musicians will get $250 and the chance to upload their album to the service, called TADL Waves. Denby recruited the band The Accidentals to sit on the panel of jurors.

Artists can submit songs until July 8. The service will launch later this summer and will be free online for anyone to browse and listen.

The streaming site comes to TADL from a startup called Rabble, which has helped many other libraries across the U.S. create their own local music sites.
