Shredding 75: IPR goes skiing

Boyne Mountain Resort opened January 10, 1949.

It's finally snowing in Northern Michigan — and just in time for one local ski resort to mark its 75th anniversary with a three-day, nonstop ski challenge.

The snow is good news for the thousands of people expected to shred the region's ski hills.

One of those hills, Boyne Mountain Resort in Charlevoix County, is celebrating its 75th anniversary this week with 75 straight hours of skiing, starting Wednesday night.

The Boyne Ski Club held its grand opening on January 10, 1949. Since then, the slope has been praised for being an accessible run for beginners and a place for experts to hone their craft.

In the 1950s, Norwegian alpine ski racer and Olympic gold medalist Stein Eriksen practiced his aerial maneuvers while teaching courses at the resort.

It's also known for bringing the first chair lift to the midwest from Sun Valley Resort in Idaho and most recently the installation of the Midwest's first eight-person chairlift.

"These innovations and continual push to expand and be the best has really been at the core since the very beginning" said Boyne Resorts Director of Communications Erin Ernst. "It shows through our entire resort's timeline and history."

The mountain is a tradition for scores of Michigan residents - some of whom have visited annually for decades.
