Allison and Alan Sehoyan have called Mackinac Island home for about 18 years. They live there year-round, and see a side of the island not readily apparent to most visitors.

Spring is finally here which means the ferries are gearing up to take thousands of tourists across the Straits of Mackinac to one of the state's top destinations.

For Allison and Alan Sehoyan though, Mackinac Island is home all year round.

"It's beautiful in the wintertime, we do love it, it's so quiet," Allison said. "But it does have its challenges because you're living on an island and there are no cars."

2023 also marks the 125th anniversary of the island's motorized vehicle ban. Alan said a long time on the island makes it difficult to get reacquainted with cars.

"The world seems to be moving so fast when you're on the mainland going 75 (miles per hour) down the freeway," he said.
