First opera composed by a woman to be staged at the Met in over 100 years

The Metropolitan Opera announced it's 2016-2017 season yesterday and it includes the premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s L’Amour de Loin (“Love From Afar”), which debuted in Salzburg in 2000.  One of six new productions next season, it will be directed by Robert Lepage and Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki will conduct. The performances will mark the first time that the Met has staged an opera by a woman composer since 1903.  That production was "Der Wald", a one act opera with libretto and music by Dame Ethyl Smyth and presented on double bills with Il Trovatore and La Fille du Régiment.
