Roger Tapping, a member of the Juilliard String Quartet and Juilliard's viola faculty, died Tuesday of cancer. He was 61.

In a joint statement, his colleagues in the Juilliard Quartet celebrated Tapping's passion for teaching and performing and praised him for the energy that he brought to their rehearsals and performances.

When Tapping joined the Juilliard Quartet in 2013, he became only the third person to hold that role since the quartet's founding in 1946.

Tapping and the rest of the Juilliard Quartet visited Interlochen Center for the Arts most recently in 2017, where they recorded a performance and interview in Studio A.
