Flutist Julia Benitez-Nelson is a senior at Interlochen Arts Academy. She was a Concerto Competition finalist.
Julia visited IPR's Studio A to chat and perform Pierre Sancan's Sonatine for Flute and Piano with pianist Soojin Kang.
She says one thing she appreciates about Interlochen is the way the supportive environment helps artists to discover themselves.
“I really love how supportive this community is, and I feel like you can really flourish and become the person you truly are here.”
Pierre Sancan’s Sonatine is an impressive showpiece for the flutist. Julia says she enjoys the energy of the work.
“… I think it really encompasses all the qualities of the flute… it’s such a fun and energetic and flamboyant piece, and I feel like that’s really what the flute is. Almost birdlike, in a sense.”

She also highlights the work of her collaborative partner, pianist Soojin Kang.
“Soojin and I, we just connect really well on this piece. It’s always very easy to play with her.”
Julia studies with Nancy Stagnitta. Stefan Wiebe engineered this edition of Studio A.
