Emma Spaniol has been coming to Interlochen since they were eight weeks old, but this is their first summer here as a full-fledged camper.
Emma is the principal clarinet of the Interlochen Philharmonic. Their favorite piece from this summer's orchestra rep is tied between Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnol and Rossini's overture to "La gazza ladra."
Of the Rossini, Emma says, "It was a lot of triplets, but it was a lot of fun."
Emma also attends Lawrence University, studying clarinet and psychology.
Their father, Doug Spaniol, has been teaching bassoon at Interlochen Arts Camp in the summers since 1999.
During the school year, he is a professor at Butler University in Indianapolis.
Although Emma originally wanted to play the bassoon too, their father convinced them otherwise.
He jokes that it was because he knew Emma would be better than him. "Honestly, I just didn't want the competition," Doug says with a laugh.
The father and daughter visited Studio A to perform music of Beethoven for clarinet and bassoon (WoO 27).
Although the pair has played together before (such as for IPR's 2020Notes from Home series), this is one of their first formal forays into a duet for clarinet and bassoon.
"This [Studio A session] will be our biggest clarinet and bassoon gig by far," Doug says.
Kolyo Vanchev and Logan Gare engineered this edition of Studio A.
