A campus-wide sonic installation celebrating Interlochen's centennial was recently dedicated, and that dedication ceremony included a brand new piece for percussion ensemble.
The wind chime installation is called "Sounding the Call." It was designed by Interlochen Arts Academy and Camp alum Garry Kvistad and decorated by current Interlochen Arts Academy visual arts students.
The central piece of the installation is a metallophone that contains the 18 notes from "Sound the Call," an Interlochen anthem that is part of Edwin Franko Goldman's "The Interlochen Bowl."
The wind chimes contain the same notes as the metallophone from "Sound the Call."
The "Sounding the Call" installation was recently dedicated in a ceremony on Interlochen's campus.
The dedication ceremony included the world premiere performance of a piece for percussion ensemble composed by Interlochen Arts Camp alum Joey Karz.
According to Karz, "and as it was" is "a reflection on this past century and an optimistic daydream of the next."
The music includes fragments of “Sound the Call” as well as quotations from other pieces by composers who attended Interlochen.
