The composer, conductor, educator and radio host Bill McGlaughlin has died. He was 82.
McGlaughlin hosted "Exploring Music," a syndicated classical music radio program that aired nationwide, including on Classical IPR. He had recently stepped down as host.
In a post on her Facebook page, jazz musician Karrin Allyson wrote, "It is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of my beloved partner, Bill McGlaughlin. In this season of grief, I am grateful for your kindness, your prayers, and the privacy to honor a life deeply loved and forever remembered."
McGlaughlin had recently announced his departure from "Exploring Music" after 22 years. Produced and distributed by WFMT in Chicago, "Exploring Music" was widely regarded as the heir apparent to "Adventures in Good Music" with Karl Haas.
McGlaughlin also hosted "Saint Paul Sunday" from 1980 to 2007, which during its run was the most widely syndicated classical music radio program in the United States.
Earlier in his career, McGlaughlin was a well-established conductor and served as the music director at organizations including the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra and the Kansas City Symphony.
The final episodes with McLaughlin as host are currently scheduled to air the week of August 17, 2026 with the theme "Curse of the Ninth! Ninth Symphonies." The show continues beyond that date with new host Peter van de Graaff.
"Exploring Music" airs weeknights at 7 p.m. on Classical IPR.
