Opera singer Katherine DeYoung spoke to Classical IPR about her first season as a chorus member at the Metropolitan Opera

Katherine DeYoung knew she wanted to be an opera singer after seeing a performance of Jacques Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffman" in HD at the State Theater in Traverse City as a sophomore in high school.

She just finished her first season as a chorus member with the Metropolitan Opera.

DeYoung attended Interlochen Arts Camp, Michigan State University and the University of Houston.

She also did apprenticeships with the Santa Fe Opera, the Detroit Opera and Lyric Opera in Chicago before auditioning for the Metropolitan Opera chorus.

DeYoung described the fast-paced environment of the Metropolitan Opera, sharing that performers typically work on three shows at once while also performing most nights.

She participated in twelve shows this past season. Her favorite shows to be a part of were "La Bohème" and "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay."
