The Life of the Traverse City State Hospital: Changing Communities Over Time

Monday, March 9, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. — Join us for a special evening as we celebrate the preservation, and the future, of the Grand Traverse Commons.

This event explores the evolution of the historic State Hospital grounds and will begin with Matthew Ross, Executive Director at the Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park, as he discusses the Friends of Historic Commons’ vital work in identifying and preserving the majestic trees that grace the historic front lawn, illustrating how these specimens link Building 50 to the 50-acre Historic Barns Park and the 27-acre Botanic Garden.

The exploration continues with a special screening of Season 3, Episode 1 from the PBS online series Songs About Buildings and Moods, highlighting Building 50. The episode features an evocative score by Interlochen Center for the Arts faculty composers Cynthia Van Maanen and Thomas Childs which has been recorded by musicians including current Interlochen students and alumni. These talented composers will be in attendance at the event and their composition “transformational landscapes” captures the architectural form of Building 50 while aiming to showcase the community spirit that exists in both Traverse City and Interlochen.

Finally, the event looks toward the future with Raymond Minervini, of The Minervini Group, as he shares new visions and upcoming development steps for this exceptional property.

The history of the Commons is made of more than just bricks and mortar—it’s made of your memories. We invite all attendees to learn how they can participate in an upcoming oral history project hosted by the Friends of Historic Commons. Help us preserve the human stories of this campus for the future.

This event is free to the public.
