A rough go for holiday travel as Thanksgiving snow blankets northern Michigan

It's a snowy Thanksgiving for northern Michigan.

Traverse City had just an inch or two on Thursday morning. Along the lakeshore, even less snow was on the ground. But move inland and it’s a different story.

There could be more than a foot of snow on the ground by the end of today in the inland stretch from Bellaire southeast toward Grayling.

"I know here at the office south of Gaylord we probably had 6 to 8 (inches) last night alone," said meteorologist Mike Boguth with the National Weather Service in Gaylord.

And while holiday travelers might be chagrined by the weather, it's pretty normal this time of year.

"If anything we're a little bit late to get our first decent lake effect event," Boguth said.

Drivers can expect difficult conditions today and through the weekend.

"When you hit those lake effect bands it's just whiteout. You can't see anything," he said.

The snow will start to taper off tonight before another round arrives at the end of the weekend.

"We're watching another system this weekend," he said. "Still a little uncertainty in terms of how much snow we're going to see. Anyone coming home Saturday or Sunday is going to hit some snow-covered roads again."
