"Escanaba in da Moonlight" turned 25 years old this year.

The film was written and directed by Jeff Daniels, who also stars in the surreal-but-still-quintessentially-Up-North comedy.

And the line to see a free screening of it at the Garden Theater in Frankfort on Nov. 13 wrapped around the building.

IPR's Dan Wanschura spoke with Brauer before the event. Hear their conversation:

Rich Brauer on the making of 'Escanaba in da Moonlight'
The film's director of photography talks to IPR about the surreal comedy that brought Up North hunting to the nation

"When we screened this movie the first time, in Escanaba, I watched the people in the audience as the movie was playing," Brauer said. "There were people barely able to not fall on the ground because they were laughing. It was so fresh."

Brauer said he had seen the story on stage as a play at Jeff Daniels's Purple Rose Theater in Chelsea, Mich., and loved it so much he went a second time. Brauer got word to Daniels that he thought it would make a good film.

Daniels called, they started talking, and the rest is history.

Chili cookoff

IPR's event also featured a chili cookoff featuring four local chefs:

  • Rick Schmitt, of Stormcloud Brewing Company
  • Ed Carrella, of Vita Bella
  • Joe Meyers of Rocks Landing
  • Steve Tebo, recently retired from The Lodge at Chimney Corners

Meyers came away the champion, after audience voting.

Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed some food and film with us. We hope to see you at more IPR events in the near future.
