For Andrew Dost, playing music is first and foremost about a sense of community, from the audience all the way up to the stage, with his musician friends Andrew Lutes and Jack Senff.

"It started as just a way for us to get together," said Dost, whose time with the band "fun." brought two Grammy wins. "We made some chili, and the three of us — me, Jack and Andrew, wanted to just have an excuse to get together during a cold time of year.

Chili probably won't be part of it this year, their second at the City Opera House in Traverse City (the possibility of spilling big bowls of soup feels incompatible with the venue, he said) but there will be plenty of wonderful things to nourish your ears.

"I'm going to be debuting some new songs," he said. "Jack and Andrew will as well, I believe."

Dost's latest is "Grey and Black Bee," out today under his new performing venture, Metal Bubble Trio.

And while he still enjoys recording, there's something special, Dost says, about being at a live concert — whether you're on stage or in the crowd.

"That's why this series has gone on so long," he said. "It feels good to be hearing music even if there are mistakes. The studio environment offers a lot of control, but live, it's a little wilder, a little more free. You're there with people. Community is why I play music anyway, just to be with my friend and to be around humans."

"Hello Darkness" is on stage at the City Opera House in Traverse City the night of Nov. 1. More info.
