Interlochen Arts Camp welcomes guest conductor Caroline Beatty, who takes the podium this Sunday, July 6, to lead the World Youth Wind Symphony.
The program features Zhou Tian’s "Sinfonia," Nicole Piunno’s "Bright Shadow Fanfare" and a wind band arrangement of the Scherzo from Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Symphony no. 9.
Among the most intriguing works on the program is Vaughan Williams’s Scherzo, newly arranged for wind ensemble. Dr. Beatty describes the movement with a smile: “To me, it sounds like Vaughan Williams went and had a beer with Shostakovich. It’s great, exciting music.”
The student musicians of the World Youth Wind Symphony rehearse intensively, often twice daily, preparing to bring their music to the stage each weekend.
"The challenge is you don’t know who you’re going to have until you get there," Dr. Beatty shared in a recent interview with Classical IPR. “Which is why you have to have some pieces that will challenge what they have done in the past and some that they’re going to sound great on quickly.”
Ahead of the concert, Beatty joined Classical IPR's Nancy Deneen for a conversation about her approach to conducting and her connection with the next generation of musicians.
You can attend the concert live from Corson Auditorium — join Interlochen Arts Camp's premiere wind ensemble for their weekly concert.
