Michigan's Secretary of State stopped by the IPR studios during a campaign swing through northern Michigan.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is already on the campaign trail for governor… more than a year ahead of the primary.

Benson visited Traverse City earlier this week and while she was here, she dropped by and spoke with IPR.

She spoke with IPR reporter Claire Keenan-Kurgan about childcare solutions, light rail, and Benson's role overseeing elections.

Listen to their conversation in the audio player above.

The primary for governor is in August of 2026. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer cannot run again because of term limits.

U.S. Rep. John James is leading the polls for the Republican nomination, but these are still the early days.

As candidates visit our region, we’ll continue reaching out to talk with them, and share their views here on IPR News Radio.

Claire joined Interlochen Public Radio in summer 2024. Before arriving at IPR, she interned for WBEZ’s data journalism team in Chicago and for the investigative unit of American Public Media.
