Copper mines, Star Wars and old engines: IPR stories win honors

Interlochen Public Radio won awards for stories on copper mining in the Upper Peninsula, a translation of "Star Wars: A New Hope" into Anishinaabemowin and a story on the Buckley Old Engine show.
Interlochen Public Radio won 2025 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for stories on copper mining in the Upper Peninsula, a translation of "Star Wars: A New Hope" into Anishinaabemowin and a story on the Buckley Old Engine show.

Interlochen Public Radio is the winner of three Regional Edward R. Murrow awards, the most of any public radio station in Michigan this year.

The awards are named for the famed and esteemed CBS broadcaster and distributed by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA).

Judges honored IPR for the following stories in the following categories:

Congrats to Dan, Izzy and Ellie on their work. And congratulations to our other public radio colleagues who received honors at WCMU in Mt. Pleasant, WMUK in Kalamazoo and Michigan Public in Ann Arbor.

A win in Region 7 — Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois — means these stories are now under consideration for the national competition.

IPR won a national Murrow award last year, for Dan Wanschura's episode of Points North titled "Complete With His Language: Kenny Pheasant and the Great Lakes' Original Tongue."
