Conductor and composer Jeffrey Cobb stepped into Classical IPR studios to discuss his upcoming choral collaboration and season finale performance with the Traverse City Philharmonic.
The Philharmonic's TC Jazz orchestra will present a special performance of "Jazz Cantatas," featuring music by Duke Ellington and Jeffrey Cobb. The concert includes Cobb's "The Lesson of the Lark," which was first performed virtually in December 2020 but now receives its live premiere.
Cobb's music was inspired by a children's book by his wife, Laura Knight Cobb, which celebrates a milestone in the women's suffrage movement.
"We were all set to premiere 'The Lesson of the Lark' in April of 2020 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment," starts Cobb. "But then COVID hit. This will be our live premiere of the piece."
The program also includes a TC Phil premiere of Duke Ellington's "Sacred Concerts." Cobb, who will conduct the combined ensembles of over 80 performers, shares that this is a unique opportunity to present his own work alongside Ellington’s groundbreaking music.
