The Native American Student Organization at Northwestern Michigan College will host its annual pow wow in Traverse City this Saturday to celebrate Native American students graduating this year.
Nathan Bootz, a student success coach at NMC, said it's “an opportunity for us to show our appreciation for each other, to celebrate our Native American students earning a degree, and a great way for us to come together as multiple tribes."
“Earning a degree is a big thing," he said. "Some people do it in two years, some people it takes longer. But in our eyes, it doesn't matter. We're here to celebrate you and what you've earned."
The pow wow, which is open to the public, will feature dancers, drummers, and storytelling from members of the Grand Traverse Band. There will also be food, clothing and jewelry vendors.
The event starts at 1 p.m. on NMC’s Front Street campus. The Grand Entry, the traditional start of the pow wow, will begin at 2:30 p.m.
