An upcoming world premiere at Interlochen Center for the Arts brought composer Chen Yi to Classical IPR studios.
Friday’s Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra concert features the first performance of "Children’s Suite for Orchestra," a three-movement work by Chen Yi inspired by Chinese folk traditions.
Interlochen Center for the Arts has partnered with Juilliard Pre-College to co-commission two new orchestral works each year for three years, beginning with the 2024–25 season.
This year’s commissions include Chen Yi's "Children's Suite" featured in Friday’s program.

Chen Yi is a Pulitzer-nominated violinist and composer whose music combines traditional Chinese elements with Western classical instruments and forms.
As an advocate for Asian composers and women in music, Chen Yi has served on the board of the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the American Music Center and the International Alliance of Women in Music.
