Calling all cellists in the Grand Traverse region!
The Traverse Symphony Orchestra's Civic Strings is launching a brand new Civic Cello Club in May.
Lynne Tobin is director of the TSO Civic String Program and also a cellist in the Traverse Symphony Orchestra.
She said that the cellos often unintentionally overpower the rest of the string instruments during rehearsals and performances.
"They are constantly hearing me, as the conductor, say, 'Shh! Softer! Cellos, not so loud!'” Tobin explained.
The idea for a Civic Strings cello ensemble started as a joke, though.
"One night at rehearsal, I apologized to the Civic orchestra cellos and said, 'Maybe we should have a Cello Club so we can play as loud as we want with a bunch of fellow cellos!'" Tobin said. "The response was enthusiastically positive, and I started to think that we should really do it instead of just joking about it."
The idea is coming to fruition, and the TSO Sinfonia Cello Club has issued an invitation for all cellists to come play cello ensemble repertoire with "fellow mellow cellos."
They'll rehearse Wednesday evenings in the month of May, with an open rehearsal-slash-informal public performance on May 24 at Kirkbride Hall in Traverse City.
