Republican state Rep. John Roth and Democratic state Rep. Betsy Coffia might have different approaches to legislating.

But in separate interviews with IPR, they also said there's some common ground when it comes to securing funding for northern Michigan.

Roth told IPR's Dan Wanschura that he'd like to review different departments and programs in the state budget to see what's still working. He'd like to see the budget focus on access to mental health care and housing needs.

And he'd like to see more money for roads — with that funding sent to county road commissions, "where they can fix stuff locally, and they know where the problems are, better than our state does."

Coffia, in her first term, said she heard about so many issues during her campaign that it's hard to pick just one as a major priority. But housing and access to healthcare are at the top of the list.

She also said she's proud of provisions that make school lunches free to students and families, and a expand to the Earned Income Tax Credit, which "impacts almost 5,000 working families in the 103rd (district)."
