Sopranos Lizzy Palumbo and Vaughn Holleran are students at Interlochen Arts Camp.
They came by Studio A for a conversation with Keith Brown and to perform music of Brahms and Mozart.
Lizzy Palumbo comes to Interlochen from New Jersey and is studying voice this summer with Dr. Ian Greenlaw.
Formerly a virtual attendee of Interlochen Online, she shared that she loves being here in person, making friends in an international community of artists.
“I really like how everyone is from all over the world… I have really close friends from Serbia, which is really cool, and (know) people from Paris… I love how everyone is just so interested in music, just like I am.”
In addition to her singing, Lizzy is a competitive swimmer and likes to draw.
She performed "Wie Melodien," a song by Johannes Brahms, with pianist Tina Chou.
Vaughn Holleran is a soprano from the Chicago area originally.
She shares Lizzy’s excitement at being surrounded by so many others who also have an interest in opera.
Vaughn’s performance of the Italian aria, “Deh vieni, non tardar” by Mozart includes a speech-like section called a recitative. This calls for serious dedication to prepare, as this style requires excellent command of the Italian text.
“I’ve actually been singing this song probably for about two to three years now. The recitative definitely took a long time to learn.”
She is very active at her school, where she’s on the swim team, and plays water polo and basketball too, as well as singing in an a cappella group.
Vaughn is studying voice this summer with Peg Plambeck. She performed Mozart's aria "Deh vieni, non tardar" with pianist Islei Hammer.
Special thanks to voice area coordinator Dr. Autumn West. This edition of Studio A was engineered by Stefan Wiebe.
