In the past week, two small aircraft crashed, killing members on board.

On Saturday, a commuter plane nosedived onto a landing strip on Beaver Island, killing the pilot, three passengers and two dogs. An 11-year-old girl was the lone survivor.

Then on Monday, another plane crashed near Boyne City, killing the two people on board.

Air safety investigators are looking into the causes of the incidents while the community mourns.

IPR’s Taylor Wizner spoke with Bill Ross, the president of the Experimental Aircraft Association Grand Traverse Region chapter, about the impact the deaths have had on the flight community and what may have caused these tragedies.

Taylor Wizner covers heath, tourism and other news for Interlochen Public Radio.
