By Linda Stephan

The long-time owner of Mackinac Island's iconic Grand Hotel has died at age 80.

Dan Musser Jr. started working at the hotel as a college student in 1951. It was then owned by his uncle.

At that time, hotel staff describe the Grand as a hotel that looked just like any other. Not so today.

Musser became president of the Grand Hotel in 1960 and bought it with his wife in 1979. He doubled its size and remodeled it into a world-class destination, with no two rooms alike and great attention to detail.

He and his wife Amelia also raised show dogs. Their Scottish Terrier Sadie earned "Best In Show" at the 2010 Westminster Dog Show.

Dan Musser is survived by Amelia, three children and seven grandchildren. The family retains ownership of the hotel.

Funeral services are Wednesday in East Lansing.
