Across the state millions of Michiganders are staying at home after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued a "stay at home" order for at least the next three weeks. But what if you don’t have a home? The order makes no mention of people experiencing homelessness.

Homeless shelters and nonprofits are getting headcounts of the homeless across the country this month. The data goes to the federal government for homelessness prevention. But this year's count in northern Michigan happened to fall on one of the coldest nights of the year.

A new development in Traverse City hopes to put a dent in the area’s affordable housing problem. When it’s finished, Carson Square will provide 36 new low-cost apartments. 

Carson Square has been nearly three years in development but Wednesday morning, it was time to break out the ceremonial shovels. 

The project is meant for people who can’t otherwise find a place to live but Goodwill Executive Director Cecil McNally says that group includes people you might not think of when you hear the word “homeless.”

  Paperworks Studio in Traverse City has one more year to become solvent.

Grand Traverse Industries will take over the financially troubled business in March. The head of GTI, Steve Perdue, says they need to see by September that it is possible for Paperworks to break even by next January.

"That’s our target," says Perdue "We’re going to give it our very best."

Paperworks Studio in Traverse City had a record year in 2013 selling its handmade greeting cards. It just it wasn’t enough for the business to break even. Paperworks was created 20 years ago to employ people with disabilities doing creative work. It has been widely praised for enriching the lives of its employees but the current owner is looking for someone else to run it.

Paperworks Studio made more than a 100,000 Christmas cards last fall. Brian Lewis, directs sales and says that eclipsed what the business was doing just a few years ago.
