Flock cameras in Grand Traverse County have taken photographs of almost 450,000 vehicles in the last 30 days. But who is searching through the data? And what are they searching for? Locally, the only check on searches comes from the policing authorities themselves.

The little cameras, installed and monitored by police, take tracking photos of passing vehicles. Antrim County currently has eight cameras deployed, with three more planned for installation. Grand Traverse County has 28.

East Bay Township became the third community in Grand Traverse County to purchase license plate surveillance cameras from Flock Safety.

The cameras, which have already been approved by nearby Garfield and Peninsula townships, be used to check for stolen vehicles, missing persons or to aid investigations.
