On this program, we revisit a Sunday night in 1961 when Joe Maddy led the National High School Symphony Orchestra in two Tchaikovsky masterpieces: "Romeo and Juliet" and the Symphony no. 6
The concert took place Sunday, July 23, 1961 in the Interlochen Bowl.
Interlochen's founder Dr. Joseph Maddy conducted the National High School Symphony Orchestra in Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture as well as the Symphony no. 6 "Pathétique."
The performance was dedicated to the memory of David Robertson, who was the conductor of the University Symphony Orchestra and the All-State Orchestra at Interlochen's National Music Camp in 1956.
The archival recordings heard on this program are available thanks in part to the Association for Recorded Sound Collections' Classical Music Preservation grant, support from IPR listeners and the Hamer D. and Phyllis C. Shafer Foundation.
Michael Culler provided audio engineering assistance.
