Part 4 of the Anishinaabe Creation Story – told by language teacher Kenny Pheasant.

TRANSCRIPT:
From the turtles back to present time. Our nation is called Anishinaabe, the good people.

We cover two countries, part of Canada and all the great lakes area.

Within the nation are tribes the Ojibwe/Chippewa, Odawa/Ottawa, Bodwe’aadamiinh/Potawatmii.

There was confusion when people tried to speak in our language, no one could understand each other. Ojibwe means lodge builders, Odawa means traders, Bodwe’aadamiinh means fire keepers.

We were asked if we had a name for our land, yes, Mshiikenh which is now Michigan.
