Scene from Rodelinda by George Frideric Handel.

The 2021-22 season of Saturday matinee broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera continues with Handel’s grand drama Rodelinda.

Soprano Elza van den Heever stars in the title role as the noble queen who takes a stand to defend her kingdom and her family. Countertenor Iestyn Davies is her husband, the deposed king Bertarido, and tenor Paul Appleby is the conqueror Grimoaldo, who seeks to claim Rodelinda to secure his place on the throne.

The superb ensemble cast also features mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, and bass-baritone Adam Plachetka.

Harry Bicket, a renowned master of the Baroque style, conducts the Met Orchestra in Handel’s powerfully moving score.

Rodelinda will be heard on Classical IPR at 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 19.
