SHOW TUNES S4 EP 11 - GYPSY (1959)

Original Broadway Cast Album Cover, 1959

Stephen Sondheim teams up with Jule Styne for a musical about famed burlesque artist Gypsy Rose Lee - or is it really about her mom?

GYPSY: A MUSICAL FABLE is based on the life story of the renowned burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee. Born a shy girl named Louise, she traveled the circuit in the dying days of vaudeville as second fiddle to her talented sister, June.

Their mother "Mama Rose" is the main engine of the show - the ultimate stage mother/"momager." She's unforgettably portrayed by Ethel Merman.

Tony Awards (1960):

The show was nominated for, but did not win, eight Tony Awards. Ethel Merman, on the other hand, won the Grammy Award for "Best Musical Theater Album!"
