GYPSY: A MUSICAL FABLE is based on the life story of the renowned burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee. Born a shy girl named Louise, she traveled the circuit in the dying days of vaudeville as second fiddle to her talented sister, June.
Their mother "Mama Rose" is the main engine of the show - the ultimate stage mother/"momager." She's unforgettably portrayed by Ethel Merman.
Tony Awards (1960):
The show was nominated for, but did not win, eight Tony Awards. Ethel Merman, on the other hand, won the Grammy Award for "Best Musical Theater Album!"
