NMC Virtual Choir: 'How can I keep from singing?'

In the midst of a pandemic, a brand new music ensemble has been created in Northern Michigan.

Jeffrey Cobb, Director of Music Programs at Northwestern Michigan College, quickly assembled the NMC Virtual Choir. He spoke with Classical IPR about the project.

Cobb arranged "Amazing Grace" and "How Can I Keep from Singing" for a virtual SATB choir and instrumental musicians.

Each singer went to a website (designed by Cobb's son Elijah) and recorded their individual voice part as they sang along with a reference track.

Then, Cobb and his daughter Arianna edited the audio files and videos together to create the look and sound of the virtual choir.

More than 60 musicians participated in the project, including members of the Grand Traverse Chorale, the NMC Chamber Singers, the NMC Children's Choir, Canticum Novum and the NMC Concert Band. Several members of the NMC faculty also joined as singers or instrumentalists.

Watch and hear the entire performance in the video below. Laura Cobb created the cover artwork.
