Republicans and Democrats in the state House have come to an agreement on the state’s K-12 education budget.
The details won’t be released until later Thursday when a committee will vote on the plan.
Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield previously called the ongoing disagreements on the budget between the Republican-led Legislature and Democratic Gov. Grethcen Whitmer “silly.” He says he’s glad both sides were able to come together to fund the state’s schools.
“We’ve come together. We’ve reached an agreement," says Chatfield. "We want to get our schools funding. They deserve to know what their funding and schedule will be next year and we’re happy to give that to them.”
The full House and Senate would still need to vote on the plan before it can go to Whitmer’s desk. A spokesperson for the state Senate says it will likely pass.
Republican lawmakers and the governor remain at odds over the rest of the state budget.
