Traverse City Attorney Dan O’Neil announced his bid for Michigan’s 104th State House District, which represents Grand Traverse County.

The Democratic candidate threw his name in the hat late Tuesday afternoon. Republican State Rep. Larry Inman’s (R-Williamsburg) will vacate the post next year, because he is term limited.

“I think there was really tremendous support in the community for our campaign,” O’Neil said. “I attribute that to talking about things that matter to people in this community — schools, roads, water.”

He lost to Inman in 2018 by 349 votes out of nearly 50,000 votes cast.

Former local Republican Party Chair John Roth announced last summer that he would run for the 104th district on the Republican ticket.

"We need some honesty and transparency in that seat," Roth said.

Inman's last year in the State Capitol has been marred with criminal charges, a trial and a recall effort.

O’Neil is an attorney at the Traverse City-based law firm Thompson & O’Neil.
