How an Old Michigan Law Kept a Measure off the Ballot

Students from Benzie County will continue paying an out-of-district-rate for tuition at Northwestern Michigan College. A proposal to change that was withdrawn this week.

Just the other day… I was walking down the street when I caught a whiff of the distinct smell of freshly fallen leaves…

I immediately had a hankering for apple cider and corn on the cob … when just as quickly, I started to feel an inherent sense of resistance to the end of summer…

That’s when I remembered… It’s back to school season… which means students all over the state are returning to the classroom.

From grade school and highschool… to universities and community colleges… like Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City.

But students who live in Benzie County and attend the community college in Traverse City… pay a little more because they’re considered “out-of-district.”

A proposal to change that was withdrawn by the NMC Board of Trustees this week.

We’ll hear why it happened …

and we’ll remember the people who were impacted by disasters in northern Lake Michigan … with a walking tour of Petoskey.

First it is still summer… so let’s take a trip to the lake.

Water quality at Michigan’s beaches has been worse this summer…

… that’s all this week on the Up North Lowdown from Interlochen Public Radio.
