ZaRiah is an exciting emerging ensemble originally formed at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. They are the recent grand prize winners of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition—and the first wind quintet in nearly 30 years to earn this honor.
The group met during their undergraduate studies. The name "ZaRiah" comes from Azariah’s Café at Oberlin, where the group spent a lot of time hanging out and studying. "Zariah" is also an Arabic name meaning "radiance."
Although ZaRiah hasn't been able to play together continuously since undergrad, they stayed close and brought the group back together two years ago. They even had a period where they were long-distance, coming together on weekends for intense practice.
ZaRiah spoke with Classical IPR's Emma Stadelmann about their group dynamic, life as a professional musician and what their upcoming tour will bring.
