Tomorrow is the start of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Christy L'Esperance and her two co-hosts, Lara and Gabriel, talk about the games, Italian culture and classical music associated with some of the sports events.
The Winter Olympics will feature 16 different sport disciplines, and we'll look at 5 of them this week. So far we've looked at the downhill ski, figure skating and cross-country ski events. Today, let's go speed skating!
There are two types of Olympic speed skating: long track, which is on a 400 meter oval where two skaters race against the clock, and short track on a smaller oval where a bunch of skaters race.
Long track is often against the clock; short track involves aggressive passing and pack dynamics.
Today's music on Intermezzo might sound very familiar! It's Debussy's "Claire De Lune," but from the film score of "Silver Skates."
