Hygge: Snuggles — Friday

What makes you feel cozy? This week on Intermezzo, we're exploring all things hygge.

Hear today's full episode by clicking "Listen" above or find "Intermezzo" from your favorite podcast app.

Welcome to Intermezzo from Interlochen Public Radio, where we take a few minutes to bounce some ideas around about classical music.

This week we'll explore how you can feel hygge. So far we've explored feelings of hygge from a nest of pillows and blankets, from stuffed animals and warm cups of cocoa. Sounds pretty great, doesn't it?

We saved the best kind of hygge for the last day. The power of this hygge feeling is doubled because it makes two living beings feel cozy and warm.

In the winter, you might feel hesitant to get close with someone with the flu going around. But as long as you're cuddling with a person or pet who is not contagious, you might actually be fighting off that next cold in a hygge way.

The improved mood and reduced stress associated with cuddling may help the immune system function more effectively, potentially making the body more resilient to illnesses like the common cold. As if you needed a good reason to let that purring cat nap on your lap.

Hear how the voices in the Flower Duet from Leo Delibes's opera, "Lakmé," intertwine in such a relaxed, peaceful way — proving that musical phrases like to snuggle up, too.
