Roald Dahlicious: The Big Friendly Giant — Thursday

This week on Intermezzo, we'll take a look at the music — and food — associated with classic children's books written by Roald Dahl!

Hear today's full episode by clicking "Listen" above or find "Intermezzo" from your favorite podcast app.

Welcome to Intermezzo from Interlochen Public Radio, where we take a few minutes to bounce some ideas around about classical music.

With some beloved librarians from the Traverse Area District Library, host Christy L'Esperance will be exploring music from classic Roald Dahl books: "James and the Giant Peach," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," "The Big Friendly Giant," and "Matilda." Since this is a month of tasty treats, we'll talk about the food featured in those books and include a recipe here on the website!

Today, we'll look at "The Big Friendly Giant," written by Roald Dahl in 1982.

An animated film was made of "The Big Friendly Giant" in 1989, and in 2016, Steven Spielberg and composer John Williams teamed up for the 27th time to create a live action version of the film. We'll hear music from that film in this episode of Intermezzo.

John Williams - "Fleshlumpeater"

Frobscottle

A pale green, bubbly, and sweet drink from the book. It tastes of vanilla and cream with a hint of raspberry and might cause some noisy "whizzpopping."

Ingredients

Cream Soda (a glass)
Raspberry Syrup (a splash)
Popping Candy (a spoonful)
Green Food Colouring (a drop)

Instructions

Pour a glass or bottle of cream soda. Add the syrup, candy, and a drop of green food coloring. Serve and enjoy!

This week's Mystery Melody

It's time to test your ears. Each week we have a mystery melody that we have to figure out together. It relates to our topic. (We'll make the melody less mysterious each day.)

If you know the mystery melody, text your name and the title and we’ll give you a shout out on Friday. The number to text is (833) 490-4718.

Christy L'Esperance is Classical IPR's morning host and producer.
