Back to school: Music class — Friday

Head back to school with expert tips and kid-to-kid advice in our new season of "Intermezzo."

We'll close out Back to School week today with music class! We're taking a look at musicians who started early and kept with it for life.

Today, Christy got to talk with a few listeners. She learned that "learning music" is what makes Ezra, Miles and Axl proud.

For composers Teresa Carreno and Amy Beach, they learned music outside of school through self-determination.

Venezuelan pianist and composer Teresa Carreno was taught music by her Dad at first. She was writing music at age 6.

And American pianist and composer Amy Beach taught herself how to play the piano and to write music.

On today's Back to School episode of Intermezzo, we found out that young musicians find their way through the support of their schools, their families, or through their own personal determination. In most cases, it's a combination of lots of supports and hard work that helps a musician thrive for life.

This week's "Mystery Melody"

This week's Back to School Mystery Melody was "Hedwig's Theme" from John Williams's score to "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." Congratulations if you got it. Willow from Canadian Lakes, Eliza and Clara from Traverse City. We'll have another melody mystery next week.
