Back to school: Carpe diem — Wednesday

Head back to school with expert tips and kid-to-kid advice in our new season of "Intermezzo."

Today we'll explore the concept of "Carpe diem." The phrase "Carpe diem" is Latin for “seize the day.” It was written by the Roman poet Horace in his "Odes."

You’d think “seize the day,” is about working hard and making the most of your time. But actually, Horace was saying, “Enjoy the moment. Don’t worry about tomorrow.” Great advice!

Today's episode includes more great advice from our Intermezzo co-hosts today: Freddie, Poppy and Olivia.

Freddie says: "In fourth grade, going into fifth grade, try to practice good habits.
Olivia says: "Always listen!"

All of our co-hosts have great advice about looking ahead to the future!

When British composer Sir Edward Elgar was young, he and his siblings wrote a play that they performed for their parents at home. Have you ever played pretend as a kid, dressing up in costumes made from random things we find around the house.?

Well, young Edward Elgar went a step further and even made up some tunes to go with their family play. Fast forward to about 40 years later. Sir Edward Elgar was now 50 years old, and he still remembered those tunes and set them for orchestra, creating his “The Wand of Youth" suites.
