Violin with Jad: 'Double stops' — Thursday

Welcome to "Intermezzo" — where we take a few minutes to bounce some ideas around about classical music.

This week, host Christy L’Esperance is joined by Interlochen Arts Academy senior Jad Ibrahim, a violinist originally from Latakia, Syria, who shares insights about his musical journey and explains how he performs double stops on the violin.

“Double stops are when you play two strings at the same time,” explained Jad. Double stops are also part of the basic language of bluegrass music. You can see an example close in this video below.

The episode also included a nod to violinist Itzhak Perlman, whom Jad admires not only for his expressive playing but for his masterful technique.

When asked whether he ever felt discouraged early in his studies, Ibrahim offered advice: “Of course we always have ups and downs, but we don't need to be frustrated," he said.

"Everything that happens in a musical journey is a good experience. I don't really think in a negative way. Next time, I will correct it and make myself more satisfied," said Jad.
