Classical Sprouts: Novel Nutcrackers!

Duke Ellington's Nutcracker Suite

We're back with more of The Nutcracker, but it's a little different this time!

Listen to today's episode of Classical Sprouts for FIVE not-your-grandmother's Nutcrackers.

Forgot your headphones? Read on for a preview.

Wham!'s "Last Christmas" isn't the only Christmas tune that's been remixed about a thousand different ways - genres from bluegrass to klezmer have made Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker their own.

Clearly they couldn't resist their share of sugar plums and dancing mice!

Bluegrass ensemble the Front Porch Orchestra has a whole album of music from The Nutcracker played on instruments like the mandolin, banjo and fiddle.

Pianist, composer and band leader Duke Ellington created jazz arrangements of music from The Nutcracker with fun titles like "Toot Toot Tootie Toot," "Peanut Brittle Brigade" and "Arabesque Cookie."

Klezmer group Shirim's reimagined Nutcracker features instruments like the accordion, piano and clarinet.

Wendy Carlos' take on The Nutcracker uses an instrument that hadn't even been invented when Tchaikovsky was alive - the synthesizer.

And a cappella group Pentatonix's version uses no instruments at all!
